Advertorial: Madrid promotes Ibero-American co-productions
Last week the fourth edition of Iberseries & Platino Industria (I&PI) took place in Madrid. The event, sponsored by Madrid Film Office, the audiovisual office of the Madrid City Council, once again turned the city into the global epicentre of Spanish and Portuguese speaking film and audiovisual production. More than 980 companies and 2,000 professionals from nearly 50 Ibero-American countries have met to promote synergies between different industries and stimulate the development of new projects and co-productions of series and films.
International co-production has an increasingly important weight for the Madrid and Spanish audiovisual sector. In 2023, almost 50% of the feature films shot in the city were international co-productions, many of them with Ibero-American countries, such as Cerrar los ojos (Víctor Erice), El llanto (Pedro Martín-Calero) or La Navidad in their hands (Joaquín Mazón). There are also various series that are being co-produced and developed in Madrid for the Ibero-American and Spanish-speaking markets in North America, such as Santo, the first Spanish-Brazilian fiction series, Las pelotaris 1926 and The Artists, both for the VIX+ platform of Televisa Univisión, or the series Montecristo, produced by Secuoya Studio for the Pantaya platform.
During the market, Madrid Film Office organized various actions aimed at promoting co-production. Before the start of I&PI, it organised a meeting between Madrid and Mexican producers. For its part, the 'Pitch Madrid' event allowed producers from all over Latin America to learn about a selection of Madrid series and feature film projects in the development stage that have had support from the Madrid City Council through programs such as the Academy Residencies of Cinema or the Ventana Madrid co-production forum.
