Paul Mescal armours up for Gladiator 2

If you were not entertained for the first flick, Paul Mescal steps into the Colosseum for the upcoming Gladiator 2. Marking director Ridley Scott’s return to the franchise, the sequel sees Mescal play Lucius, the son of Maximus, who works his way up to gladiator to avenge his family and seek revenge against the Romans. The cast also includes Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn and Pedro Pascal. Gladiator 2 will be released in UK theatres on 15 November.

Filming for Gladiator 2, which commenced in May 2023 and wrapped in January 2024, took place in Morocco, Malta and the UK. Whilst in Morocco, production predominantly took place in Ouarzazate city. Nicknamed the door to the desert is located in south-central Morocco, known for its striking landscapes such as the Atlas Mountain and Draa Valley.

To bring the ancient Colosseum to life, filming forwent the ruins of Rome, and rather took place at Fort Ricasoli which was transformed into the statement location. The bastioned fort in Kalkara was focal point in the first Gladiator , as well as Game of Thrones, Troy, Julius Caesar and Assassin’s Creed. The Maltese film industry has seen significant growth over the years since its tax rebate incentive announcement in early 2023. Following the US strike action, production ramped up and the small region welcomes productions such as Robert Altaman’s Popeye and Steven Spielberg’s Munich.

Alongside Mescal as Lucius, Washington stars as Macrinus, Pascal as Marcus Acacius, Quinn as Emperor Geta and Fred Hechinger as Emperor Carcalla. Connie Nielsen reprises her role as Lucilla, Lucius’ mother. Lior Raz and Derek Jacobi also star. Scott serves as director for the project as well as producer alongside Michael Pruss, Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher for David Scarpa’s screen play. Hans Zimmer will not provide the climactic soundtrack for this film, instead welcoming House of Gucci, Last Duel and Shrek composer Harry Gregson Williams.
