This year marks a historic milestone, as for the first time, a film supported by the Region of Madrid’s project development grants has been selected by the Spanish Academy to represent Spain at the Oscars. Segundo Premio (Second Prize), directed by Isaki Lacuesta and Pol Rodríguez, is a Madrid-produced feature film that transports viewers to 1990s Granada, vividly portraying the origins of the Spanish legendary band Los Planetas.

On December 17, the Oscar’s shortlist will be announced, and hopes are high that Segundo Premio will continue its path toward the coveted award for Best International Feature Film.

The Region of Madrid’s appeal as a filming location continues to grow exponentially. In 2023, the region hosted over 1,000 audiovisual productions, marking a 15% increase in shoots compared to 2022. Among these projects were:
