Advertorial: Madrid, bridge with the Spanish speakers market

In recent years, Madrid has established itself as one of the main content production centres in Europe, with an increase in projects filmed in the city and produced by Madrid companies. International collaboration and co-production has become an increasingly widespread formula in Madrid, and Madrid Film Office, the audiovisual office of the Madrid City Council, was present at the Ventana Sur market with the aim of encouraging relations between the Madrid audiovisual industry and the different Ibero-American industries, a strategy that includes others actions such as the sponsorship of Iberseries & Platino Industria market and the Platino Awards.

Of the 972 films produced in Spain between 2021 and 2023, including feature films, documentaries and animation, 194 films were international co-productions, almost 50% of them produced by Madrid companies. During these three years, Madrid production companies have co-produced above all with Argentina (15 films), Mexico (12) and Peru (7), to which are added Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Panama, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic. In 2023, almost 50% of the feature films shot in the city were international co-productions, many of them with Ibero-American countries, such as Cerrar los ojos (Víctor Erice) or El llanto (Pedro Martín-Calero).

In terms of financing, the Madrid City Council's audiovisual aid offers different opportunities for Madrid production companies with international coproduction deals. Since 2021, the city of Madrid has offered two lines of audiovisual aid, one for production and the other for distribution, with a total budget of 3 million euros between them, expandable to five. The total number of international productions supported between 2021 and 2023 is 24, with Latin America having a great weight. Furthermore, in the 2023 call, a reserve line for minority international co-productions was introduced. The perceived assessment is very positive and its application meant support in 2023 for the production of four feature films under a minority international co-production regime, including Alemania (María Zanetti) and Estados generales ( Mauricio Freyre).

There are also various series that are being co-produced and developed in Madrid for the Ibero-American and Spanish-speaking markets in North America, such as “Santo”, the first Spanish-Brazilian fiction series, Las pelotaris 1926 and The Artists, both for the VIX+ platform of Televisa Univisión, or the series Montecristo, produced by Secuoya Studio for the Pantaya platform.

This growth is also perceived at an industrial level. Madrid is establishing itself as an important centre for the production of content in Spanish, which makes the city the bridge par excellence between the European and Latin American industries, with Latin American companies such as Dynamo, Dopamine, The Immigrant and Woo Films setting up offices in the region. Added to this are other business movements such as the agreement between Onza Américas and BH5 Studios, which join forces to co-produce content in Mexico and Spain, the constitution of Cacao & Cía as a joint venture between the iZen Group in Spain and the Non Stop Group in Latin America, and Anonymous Content España, the alliance in our country between Anonymous Content and Morena Films.

All of this highlights Madrid's situation as a privileged production centre for content in Spanish for Spanish-speaking markets, a line that has the strategic support of the Madrid City Council and the Madrid Film Office.
