2025 EE BAFTA nominations announced

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced the nominations for its 2025 Film Awards, showcasing a wide array of talent and storytelling that has left a significant mark on the cinematic world over the past year. This year’s nominations include super star flicks of the past year including Emilia Pérez, Wicked, Blitz, Gladiator II and many more. Amongst the nominees, are FOCUS 2024 speakers Robin Carolan for Best Original Score in Nosferatu, Valerie Déloof, Victor Fleurant, Victor Praud, Stéphane Thiébaut, and Emanuelle Villard for sound in The Substance, as well as Peter Straughan for Best Original Screenplay, Nick Emerson in editing ,and Nina Gold and Martin Ware for casting for Conclave.

Sara Putt, Chair of BAFTA, said: From a total of 235 films entered, we are delighted to announce 42 extraordinary and creatively ambitious films that have been nominated. The skills on display from creative and technical practitioners across the board are phenomenal. I look forward to celebrating the many talented people in front of and behind the camera at the EE BAFTA Film Awards 2025 ceremony on 16 February.”

 

Anna Higgs, Chair of BAFTA Film Committee, added: “Congratulations to all the 42 films nominated today. The selection of films is an incredible showcase of the very best in creative talent working in filmmaking today in Britain and globally. I’m delighted that 14 of the 24 nominees in the performance categories are receiving their first BAFTA film nomination and that 12 of the nominated films are directed by women. Our BAFTA voting members now have the unenviable task of selecting the winners which will be celebrated at the 2025 EE BAFTA Film Awards on 16 February.”

 

Leading the nominations is Edward Berger’s drama Conclave, which earned an impressive 12 nods, including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Director for Berger, and Lead Actor for Ralph Fiennes. The film’s gripping narrative and stellar performances have made it a standout in this year’s awards season.

 

Close behind is Jacques Audiard’s musical Emilia Pérez, with 11 nominations. This groundbreaking film has been recognised in categories such as Best Film and Best Director, while Karla Sofía Gascón, in a historic moment, secured a nomination for Lead Actress, becoming the first transgender woman to be nominated in this category. Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist also emerged as a strong contender, garnering nine nominations, including Best Film and Best Director. Adrien Brody’s riveting performance in the film earned him a nomination for Lead Actor, further solidifying its critical acclaim.

The Best Film category this year is a fiercely competitive field, featuring Conclave, The Brutalist, Anora directed by Sean Baker, Emilia Pérez, and A Complete Unknown directed by James Mangold. In the acting categories, there is a wealth of celebrated talent. Ralph Fiennes, Adrien Brody, Timothée Chalamet, Colman Domingo, Hugh Grant, and Sebastian Stan are all vying for the Lead Actor award, showcasing a range of diverse and powerful performances.

 

In the Lead Actress category, nominees include Cynthia Erivo for Wicked, Marianne Jean-Baptiste for Hard Truths, Mikey Madison for Anora, Demi Moore for The Substance, Saoirse Ronan for The Outrun, and Karla Sofía Gascón for Emilia Pérez.

The Outstanding British Film category highlights the diversity and depth of talent within the UK film industry. Films such as Andrea Arnold’s Bird, Steve McQueen’s Blitz, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, and Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths have all received recognition, alongside smaller, yet equally impactful productions like Kneecap and Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.

 

The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards ceremony is set to take place on February 16, 2025, at London’s Royal Festival Hall, with David Tennant returning as host. The event will be broadcast on BBC One and iPlayer, as well as BritBox in North America, the Nordics, and Australia, ensuring a global audience can partake in celebrating the best of film.
