Blumhouse director brings Wolf Man to life
Leigh Whannell, Blumhouse writer and director takes to the helm of upcoming reimagining Wolf Man. Starring Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner and Sam Jaeger, filming for Wolf Man took place in New Zealand. The howl-worthy horror flick is set for theatre release on 17 January.
The film stars Abbott as Blake, a man who, along with his family, confronts terrifying events at a secluded farmhouse. Julia Garner portrays Charlotte, Blake's wife, and Matilda Firth plays their daughter, Ginger. Principal photography commenced in early 2024 in New Zealand, chosen for its diverse landscapes that enhance the film's atmospheric tension. Director Leigh Whannell, known for The Invisible Man, collaborated with cinematographer Stefan Duscio to create a visual narrative that balances suspense with horror.
The film's narrative centres on Blake, who inherits his childhood home in Oregon following his father's mysterious disappearance. As Blake and his family settle into the farmhouse, they are attacked by an unseen creature, leading to Blake's horrifying transformation into a werewolf. This plot explores themes of isolation, family bonds, and the primal fear of the unknown.
A significant aspect of the film is its practical effects, particularly in depicting Blake's transformation. Whannell emphasized the use of practical makeup and effects to achieve a visceral and authentic portrayal, aiming to distinguish this rendition from previous adaptations. Other cast members include Matilda Firth, Benedict Hardie, Ben Prendergast, Zac Chandler, Beatriz Romilly, and Milo Cawthorne.
The film's marketing campaign began in August 2024 during Universal's Halloween Horror Nights, where a teaser image and the film's logo were unveiled. A teaser trailer released in September 2024 offered audiences a glimpse into the film's suspenseful atmosphere, though it notably withheld the full reveal of the titular creature, sparking discussions and anticipation among fans.
The film is produced by Blumhouse founder and CEO Jason Blum p.g.a., and Ryan Gosling (The Fall Guy, Lost River) and is executive produced by Leigh Whannell, Beatriz Sequeira, Mel Turner and Ken Kao. Universal Pictures and Blumhouse present a Gosling/Waypoint Entertainment production, in association with Cloak & Co: Wolf Man.
