Den of Thieves 2: Pantera shoots across UK and Canary Islands
Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr are set to return to US screens on 10 January for Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. Following on from the 2018 release of the first film, the sequel travels to Europe for the action flick as Butler’s Big Nick character closes in on Jackson Donnie who is wrapped in the world of diamond thievery and the Panther mafia. Filming which commenced in April 2023 took place across the UK and Canary Islands which created the French inspired settings.
The streets of Santa Cruz de Tenerife faced a transformation during filming for Den of Thieves: Pantera to create the films setting of Marseille including ections of the main streets which were adapted to resemble different European environments. A local bar was redesigned to appear French, complete with appropriate signage and décor, as well as the construction of a new jewellery shop in Calle Del Castillo and a police booth at the crossroads of Calle Teobaldo Power and Calle Imeldo Serís.
Specific neighborhoods in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, such as La Salud, were prominently featured during filming. Princesa Guacimara Street, known for its traditional gofio mill, was temporarily closed to accommodate the production's equipment and crew. The street's transformation included the addition of set pieces and props to align with the film's aesthetic requirements. Residents observed the area's conversion, noting that their streets had previously represented various international locales in other productions, highlighting the neighborhood's cinematic appeal.
The production also utilized natural locations, such as Las Teresitas Beach, where scenes involving lead actor Gerard Butler were filmed. Butler was observed performing sequences that required him to emerge from the water, indicating the beach's role in the film's action scenes. The choice of Tenerife offered several advantages, including favorable weather conditions, diverse landscapes, and a supportive local infrastructure for filmmaking. The island's ability to double for various European settings provided the filmmakers with the flexibility to depict multiple locations without extensive travel.
