The festival will commence with the world premiere of Tom Tykwer's latest feature, Das Licht (The Light). This German-French production delves into the dynamics of the Engels family, whose lives are transformed by the arrival of a mysterious Syrian housekeeper. Tykwer, known for films like Run Lola Run and Cloud Atlas, has previously opened the Berlinale in 2002 and 2009. Expressing his enthusiasm, Tykwer stated, "The Berlinale is the festival of my life. The city is my destiny. This film is my longing."

This year's competition features 19 films vying for the prestigious Golden Bear. Notable entries include Blue Moon, directed by Richard Linklater, this biopic explores the life of Broadway composer Lorenz Hart, with performances by Ethan Hawke and Margaret Qualley, Timestamp from Ukrainian director Kateryna Gornostai and Dreams directed by Michel Franco, a Mexican love story featuring Jessica Chastain.

Festival Director Tricia Tuttle emphasised the selection's diversity, noting the inclusion of romantic stories, comedies, and hopeful narratives. She remarked, "We have a lineup that reflects the multifaceted nature of human experience, offering both introspection and joy."

Acclaimed American filmmaker Todd Haynes will preside over the international jury. Joining him are Chinese actress Fan Bingbing, German actress and filmmaker Maria Schrader, Argentinian filmmaker Rodrigo Moreno, Franco-Moroccan filmmaker Nabil Ayouch, German costume designer Bina Daigeler, and American film critic Amy Nicholson.

British actress Tilda Swinton is set to receive the Honorary Golden Bear for lifetime achievement. In her honour, the festival will screen Friendship's Death, celebrating her career and contributions to cinema.

Beyond the main competition, the Berlinale will showcase high-profile films out of competition. Notably, Bong Joon-ho's Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, and James Mangold's Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, featuring Timothée Chalamet, are among the anticipated premieres.

The festival also introduces the "Perspectives" section, dedicated to supporting debut features. This initiative aims to spotlight emerging talent and provide a platform for fresh voices in cinema.
