Snow White adds to the enchanted Disney live action slate
Disney's highly anticipated live-action adaptation of Snow White is set to enchant audiences upon its release on March 21, 2025. Directed by Marc Webb, known for The Amazing Spider-Man series, the film stars Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. This project continues Disney's tradition of reimagining classic animated tales for new generations.
Principal photography for Snow White commenced on 1 March, 2022, primarily at Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire, England. Pinewood Studios, renowned for hosting major productions like the James Bond and Star Wars franchises, provided the perfect backdrop for bringing the fairy tale to life. In March 2022, during set construction, a fire incident occurred; fortunately, no filming was underway at the time, and there were no reported injuries.
The production also utilised various locations across London, capturing the city's historic architecture to enhance the film's aesthetic. Additionally, select scenes were filmed in Germany, adding a European authenticity reminiscent of the original Brothers Grimm tale. Filming concluded on 8 July, 2022 with additional scenes shot and completed in June 2024.
Snow White joins a growing list of Disney's live-action remakes, a strategy that has seen both critical acclaim and commercial success. This trend began with films like Cinderella (2015) and The Jungle Book (2016), which were praised for their faithful yet fresh takes on beloved classics. Beauty and the Beast (2017) and Aladdin (2019) continued this momentum, each grossing over a billion dollars worldwide, in addition to the success of The Little Mermaid (2023) starring Halle Bailey.
Looking ahead, Disney has an ambitious lineup of live-action adaptations. Following "Snow White," audiences can anticipate Lilo & Stitch, slated for release on 23 May, 2025, and a live-action Moana set for 2026. Projects like Hercules, Robin Hood, The Aristocats, Bambi, and Tangled are also in various stages of development, showcasing Disney's commitment to revitalising its classic tales.
