Gritty BBC Drama This City is Ours gives Liverpool local economy million pound boost

Liverpool’s film industry is enjoying a blockbuster moment, thanks to the recent production of the BBC drama This City Is Ours. Beyond the captivating on-screen storytelling, the series has left a lasting impact off-screen by injecting a staggering GBP9 million into the local economy. This economic boost is the result of strategic investment from the Liverpool Film Office’s Production Fund, which aims to make the city a prime destination for high-profile film and TV projects.

This City Is Ours tells a gripping tale of corruption, power, and redemption set against a gritty urban backdrop, uses Liverpool’s iconic streets and lesser-known corners as its canvas. The production not only showcased the city’s visual versatility but also delivered significant financial and social benefits.

According to figures released by the Liverpool Film Office, the production generated approximately £9 million in direct spending. This included payments to local crew members, use of city-based facilities, and investment in independent businesses—from catering companies to transport services. For Liverpool’s hospitality and service sectors, which are still recovering from the economic impact of the pandemic, this influx of revenue provided a much-needed lifeline.

“This City Is Ours is a fantastic example of how the LCR Production Fund has worked to not only draw in production but bring great benefit the local economy," Lynn Saunders, head of Liverpool Film Office and fund manager commented. “The project has reported a total spend for the region at just under £9m which equates to just under £20 for each £1 spent of the Fund’s investment – which is an outstanding achievement. With a gripping script from creator and local writer Stephen Butchard and championing our homegrown talent, there’s certainly a special buzz around this project and we can’t wait to see how it plays out on the screen.”

One of the most significant benefits of the production was its investment in local talent. The drama employed over 800 people during its run, with 75% of the crew coming from the Liverpool City Region. This commitment to hiring local professionals not only reduced production costs but also strengthened the city’s creative industry workforce.

Beyond the production set, the economic ripple effect was felt across Liverpool. Local suppliers, from catering companies to equipment rental firms, saw a surge in business. Hotels and restaurants also benefited as cast and crew stayed and dined in the city throughout the filming period. The production’s commitment to using authentic locations rather than soundstages further bolstered spending. Filming permits, location fees, and the use of local services all contributed to the multi-million-pound boost.

The success of This City Is Ours is part of a broader trend. Liverpool has become a magnet for film and TV productions in recent years, thanks to initiatives like the Liverpool Film Office’s Production Fund. With its cinematic architecture, diverse locations, and proactive support for the industry, the city is positioning itself as a rival to London and Manchester for big-budget productions.

“The LCR Production Fund isn’t just bringing millions into our local economy—it’s opening doors for local people, giving them life-changing opportunities and helping them get a foot in the door of the industry," Steve Rotheram, mayor of Liverpool City Region. “By backing projects like This City Is Ours, alongside the world-class talent and infrastructure we’ve got here, we’re making sure our region isn’t just part of the conversation—we’re leading it by working to cement the region as the ‘Hollywood of the North’”.
