In a significant development for the British film industry, Netflix has named Ollie Madden as its new Director of UK Film. The appointment reflects the streaming platform’s growing ambition to lead in regional storytelling while cultivating a robust pipeline of locally produced, globally resonant content.

“I’ve been incredibly proud to spend the past eight years with Film4 and, more recently, Channel 4 Drama, and it’s very hard to say goodbye to all my wonderful colleagues and projects,” Madden said in a statement for Channel 4. “The independence, distinctiveness and mark of quality that Film4 and Channel 4 represent is a precious thing, and I’m confident it will continue to thrive long after my departure.”

Madden arrives at Netflix with an impressive pedigree spanning more than two decades in film and television. His career includes executive positions at Warner Bros., Miramax, and production company Kudos. Most recently, he served as Director of Film4 and Channel 4 Drama, where he oversaw an era of critically lauded and commercially successful productions. His tenure included backing standout titles such as The Favourite, The Banshees of Inisherin, and The Zone of Interest—films that not only earned international acclaim but also reaffirmed the creative strength of the UK’s independent film sector.

His move to Netflix represents both a personal evolution and a strategic shift in the broader media landscape. As streaming platforms increasingly invest in regionally authentic stories, Madden’s experience places him in a unique position to identify, develop, and deliver projects that appeal to both British and global audiences. Known for his discerning creative eye and deep-rooted industry relationships, he is expected to bring a thoughtful, filmmaker-led approach to commissioning and development.

The implications of his appointment are already being felt across the UK film community. Industry observers view the move as a major endorsement of British talent and infrastructure, with Netflix doubling down on its intent to be not just a global entertainment leader, but also a meaningful cultural investor in the UK. Madden’s familiarity with the independent sector, combined with his understanding of what drives audience engagement, offers a compelling formula for high-impact content that remains true to its roots.

Farhana Bhula, current head of creative and deputy director at Film4, will take over as interim Director of Film4 effective from 1 July.  Gwawr Lloyd, commissioning editor for drama, will become interim head of drama reporting to Ian Katz.

For Netflix, the appointment underscores a long-term vision for regional growth through strategic talent acquisition. As audiences continue to seek original stories with local flavour and global relevance, the company’s investment in high-calibre leadership like Madden is both timely and astute.
