Wales Sets the Stage for Green Filmmaking with Cardiff Sustainability Showcase

The Production Guild of Great Britain’s Welsh Committee is hosting its first-ever Welsh sustainability event on 2 July 2025 at Great Point Studios, Cardiff. Held in partnership with Creative Wales, Media Cymru and Ffilm Cymru Wales, the open-day showcase will unite 24 exhibitors and industry professionals to spotlight green technology, best practices, and networking opportunities. Inspired by PGGB’s successful “Sustainability Behind the Lens” events in London, this Cardiff edition will highlight Wales' leadership in the journey toward a net-zero screen industry.

Wales is stepping into the spotlight as a sustainability trailblazer for the UK film and TV industry, with an inaugural event set for 2 July 2025 at Great Point Studios, Cardiff. Hosted by the Welsh Committee of the Production Guild of Great Britain (PGGB), and delivered in partnership with Creative Wales, Media Cymru, and Ffilm Cymru Wales, the open-access showcase is designed to promote greener practices and connect the local screen industry with cutting-edge sustainability suppliers.

“We feel so lucky as the committee to be able to host such a great event and get to work with so many local companies,” commented Edward Raselli-Lewis, line producer and chair of PGGB’s Welsh Nations and Regions. “This is a unique chance for them to showcase their sustainability practices while building vital networks within Wales.”

“Now in our third year of ‘Sustainability Behind the Lens’, seeing this initiative extend to Wales is a proud milestone,” acting CEO of PGGB Michale Beavan added, praising the expansion. “The Wales committee, under Ed Rastelli-Lewis’ leadership, has crafted a region-specific version that reflects both local needs and opportunities. The calibre of our co-hosts speaks volumes about the commitment to this cause.”

The event builds on PGGB’s ongoing “Sustainability Behind the Lens” series, which first launched in London and has gained strong traction among production professionals seeking actionable ways to reduce carbon footprints. Recognising the momentum, the PGGB Welsh Committee is now bringing the conversation to Cardiff, expanding the reach and impact of sustainable production initiatives.

Twenty-four exhibitors have already confirmed participation in the one-day showcase. Industry leaders such as Facilities by ADF, Sunbelt Rentals, Real SFX, and Geo Pura will be joined by forward-thinking service providers including Location One, Location Solutions, Get Set Hire, and Infinite Renewables. The event is free to attend for professionals across the screen sector and offers a chance to discover innovations and form collaborations driving eco-friendly production.

The event also aligns with broader national efforts to build a more sustainable screen sector. The Screen New Deal Transformation Plan for Wales—developed by Creative Wales, Ffilm Cymru, BAFTA albert, the BFI and Arup—serves as a roadmap toward net-zero productions across the UK. The Cardiff event will highlight many of the plan’s core principles, such as the shift to renewable energy, green transport alternatives, and circular production models.

“The Screen New Deal for Wales sets high benchmarks, but it’s through ongoing cooperation, knowledge sharing, and events like this that we can truly transform the sector,” said Joedi Langley, interim head of Creative Wales.

Professor Justin Lewis, Co-Director of Media Cymru, echoed this sentiment, adding:
“This showcase is an important moment in highlighting Wales' growing role as a leader in sustainable media. Through Media Cymru’s funded interventions and the passion of our creative community, we’re accelerating innovation in green practices.”

Louise Dixey, Sustainability Manager at Ffilm Cymru Wales, called attention to their ongoing “Greening the Screen” projects, which aim to tackle key challenges outlined in the Screen New Deal, including transport, energy, collaboration, and behavioural change.

As the Welsh film and TV industry continues to grow, this sustainability showcase marks an important step in ensuring that growth is both innovative and responsible. It signals not just a regional ambition, but a collective shift towards embedding sustainability at the heart of screen production nationwide.
