The Devil Wears Prada 2 heads to production

From the Ritz‑crisp offices of Runway to jetting through Paris and soaking up Manhattan's glam, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is officially underway. With fans gasping “Florals? For spring?” all over again, Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci reassemble under director David Frankel’s eye.  Kenneth Branagh joins the roster, while Adrian Grenier bows out. The sequel is set for release in May 2026.

Nearly 20 years after the original 2006 blockbuster made fashionistas out of millions, The Devil Wears Prada 2 has officially entered production. On 30 June 20th Century Studios confirmed the news with a teasing post on Instagram that showed devil-red stilettos, sending fans into a frenzy. Director David Frankel returns to helm the sequel, joined once again by screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna. The plot is said to tackle the collision between high fashion and the modern, digital media age,  a natural evolution from the original’s sharp look at print journalism.

The new film will once again star Meryl Streep as the mercurial fashion editor Miranda Priestly, a role that earned her an Oscar nomination and cultural icon status. Anne Hathaway is also reprising her role as Andrea “Andy” Sachs, the once naïve assistant who outgrew Runway’s glossy claws. Emily Blunt returns as the hilariously biting Emily Charlton, and Stanley Tucci is back as the quick-witted and stylish Nigel Kipling. All four have expressed excitement about reuniting, with Blunt recently sharing how “electric” the script felt upon first read.

Joining the principal cast is Kenneth Branagh, who plays Miranda’s elusive and often-absent husband. His role, while never seen in the original film, has reportedly been expanded to explore Miranda’s home life and inner vulnerabilities. His addition is expected to offer fresh tension and unexpected emotional beats in a film world known more for its zingers and stilettos than sentimentality. One familiar face not returning is Adrian Grenier, who portrayed Andy’s boyfriend Nate. Grenier confirmed in a recent interview that he opted out of the sequel, believing the story had moved on from Nate’s character.

While plot details are under wraps for the most part, the sequel is said to be set to follow Miranda Priestly as she faces a crisis at Runway: the once-dominant fashion magazine is struggling to stay afloat in a world driven by algorithms and influencer culture. In a desperate bid to save the publication, she turns to Emily Charlton, now a powerful executive in the luxury advertising world. Their uneasy alliance becomes the film’s dramatic backbone, loaded with friction, wit, and subtle power plays. After Andy Sachs departed Runway for the newspaper world, whether she returns to fashion is unknown.

Behind the scenes, the original creative team has reunited. Director David Frankel and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna bring their seasoned perspective, while producer Wendy Finerman continues to steer the franchise.
