Avengers: Infinity War to indulge in lengthy Scotland shoot

Avengers: Infinity War, the third instalment in the successful Marvel crossover series will be filmed in Glasgow, Edinburgh and the Highlands. Principal photography will commence on February 28th, taking up residence for a total of six months and investing around GBP10 million into the local economy.

Isle, of, Skye, Background, Scene, View, Landscape, PhotoWith a phenomenally high budget of GBP400 million, Avengers: Infinity War will have a huge impact on Scotland’s production industry. The production will no doubt reignite the debate over Scotland’s lack of a quality film studio, while bolstering the level of film tourism to the area upon the film’s release.

Lewis MacDonald, culture spokesperson for the Scottish Labour Party explains: “the fact [that] such a successful franchise will be filmed in Scotland will excite the fans but also provide a welcome boost to the economy. I hope the producers take advantage of the skills people in Scotland have to offer, so as many local people as possible can find work and Scotland’s fantastic creative community can go from strength to strength.”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe, complete with 14 unique instalments, is the most successful film franchise of all time. Avengers: Assemble and its sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron have grossed nearly USD3 billion between them.

Demand for filming in Scotland has increased with the recent presence of a variety of high-budget Hollywood features. 2015 saw Steven Spielberg source a number of plate shots in the Isle of Skye for The BFG, with Michael Bay using the same location a year later for Transformers: The Last Knight.

The vast wilderness available in Scotland has made it an attractive location for shooting large-scale action scenes, particularly when coupled with the UK’s filming incentive programme.

Feature films of any size can receive a 25% tax rebate on shoots conducted in the UK, on the basis that at least 10% of the budget is spent locally.

Avengers: Infinity War is scheduled for release in May 2018.
