Nissan/Star Wars commercial filmed in the California desert

A new commercial promoting the car manufacturer Nissan and the upcoming film, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, was filmed on location near Hemet, California. The production shut down the Domenigoni Parkway over a period of three days to film driving scenes against a desert backdrop.

Speaking about the shoot, Hemet Mayor Linda Krupa explains: “it’s good for the city in that the people who make the commercials are aware we’re here and we have different venues for filming.”

According to the Riverside County Film Commission, the production secured more than 200 room nights in local hotels, providing an economic boost to the community.

Fans of The Fast and the Furious may recognise the locale for having featured in the original 2001 film. With a long stretch of road complemented by scattered hills, Domenigoni Parkway is a location best suited for cinematic driving scenes.

Los Angeles recently played host to a spot for Guinness, featuring a group known as The Compton Cowboys as they traverse the streets of LA on horseback.

While inapplicable to commercials productions, the state of California does employ a dedicated film incentive programme. Eligible productions that meet a list of pre-determined criteria can receive a tax credit of up to 25%.

In addition to the tax incentive, California’s world-renowned crew has made it one of the most active production hubs in the country.
