New South Wales reaffirms its commitment to film

The Australian state has confirmed that up to USD10 million a year will continue to be invested through its Made in NSW fund to attract big budget features and TV shows.

In a bid to compete with other major locations, New South Wales introduced the fund in 2016. It has so far been responsible for 12 large-scale international productions, including Peter Rabbit, Pacific Rim Uprising (pictured) and Alien: Covenant, and 21 Australian TV productions utilising the state’s facilities.

Don Harwin, Minister for the Arts, explains: “when we first announced this fund, we set out to show Hollywood what NSW was capable of. I’m delighted to say that message has been received loud and clear, and we’re now extending our reach into Asia Pacific.”

To date, the fund has brought in a spend of over USD412 million from producers, created nearly 11,000 jobs and delivered USD20 for every dollar invested.

Australia’s national incentive also operates on a three tiered system. The Producer Offset provides a tax rebate for Australian nationals, while rebates of 16.5% and 30% are available for foreign productions and postproduction work respectively.
