Norwegian Love Island shot in the Canary Islands

The Norwegian version of hit British reality format Love Island shot in the Canary Islands.

©ITV PlcThe fourth series of Love Island stole the limelight in the UK over the summer with the finale delivering peak overnight viewing figures of 4.1million for ITV. The format has already been picked up by Germany’s RTL and Australia’s Nine Network. The Norwegian series aired over the summer and other Scandinavia countries including Denmark, Sweden and Finland are all expected to release series over the coming months.

The Norwegian series broke from the format’s tradition by basing the production in Spain’s Canary Islands. UK, Australian and German series all used millionaire mansions in the Balearic island of Mallorca. Contestants looking for the love of their lives enter the millionaire mansions in competition to win the GBP50,000 cash prize.

Seven Islands Film handled the logistics for producer ITV Studios Norway. The production service company has offices in both Tenerife and Gran Canaria with output covering commercial productions for brands such as Beck’s and TV series such as Paramount’s Berlin Station. It is reported that the company are also in talks to service the Danish version of the show set to be broadcast later this year.

In 2017 the Canary Islands raised the regional tax rebate to 40%, a stark difference to the majority of mainland Spain where incentives are 20%. TV series must shoot at least 20% of the season in the Canary Islands to qualify and the overall cap that can be claimed sits at EUR5.4 million. Productions must have a local spend of EUR1 million, but expenditure on local labour can be counted towards the rebate.

Both Canary Islands Film and the Tenerife Film Commission will be at FOCUS the meeting place for international production this year on the 4 & 5 December in London. Register here for your free delegate badge to find out more about filming in Spain.
