Ciclope Africa celebrate the regions most well-crafted films

In mid-April 2019, African producers, marketers and creatives gathered in Johannesburg for Ciclope Africa. The two day event, culminating in an awards show, celebrates the regions most well-crafted commercials, music videos and short films.

Now in its second year, Ciclope Africa is held with the aim of putting professionals and work for the African market under the spotlight. This years jury, chaired by Colin Howard (Egg Films) and Cat Lindsay (The Rudeboy Collective) chose the best works in eighteen categories from 150 entries.

After the final ranking, Romance Films won the special award for Production Company of the Year and Joe Public United won Agency of the Year.

Chicken Licken – Sbu 2.0 was awarded a Grand Prix. Directed by Greg Gray and produced by Romance Films for Joe Public United. The TVC is a quirky comedy about a science teacher who invents a robotic version to fill his shoes whenever the craving for chicken strikes.

Two further Chicken Licken spots delivered by Joe Public were highlighted in during the ceremony. Legend of Big John won in the visual effects category. Directed by Grant de Sousa, Chocolate Tribe carried out the VFX work for production company they. 3 Pieces for Durango meanwhile, took home the awards for production design as well as styling & costume design. Plank Film Productions produced the spot directed by Peter Pohorsky. Martin Schlumpf, Creative Director at Joe Public, the agency behind the Chicken Licken campaigns has explained that "with such a proudly South African client, we always try to create ideas that are relevant. We try to showcase real South Africans at the forefront of global playing fields in an entertaining and humorous way".

The 10th edition of the international conference and award show dedicated to craft in moving image will take place on November 7th and 8th 2019, in Berlin.
