The Joker filmed in New York and New Jersey

Set in the fictional city of Gotham, New York and New Jersey provided the backdrop to Warner Bros’ Batman origin story, Joker

Set in 1981, the film stars Joaquin Pheonix as Batman villain the Joker in his journey from down-trodden clown into Batman’s evil nemesis.

Principal photography took place in New York, but some street scenes were filmed in New Jersey including Market Street and the Paramount theatre in Newark. The city has featured in previous Batman features including The Dark Knight Rises.

Arkham Asylum, the fictional psychiatric hospital that appears in DC Comics was found at Brooklyn Army Terminal, while the staircase featured in the movie’s promotion is located in Bronx’s street steps. 

Most recently, Batman prequel Pennyworth a TV series for Epix filmed in London. 

New York has had a competitive tax credit in place for many years now, while New Jersey unveiled their scheme 2019.

New York provides a 30% tax credit to feature film & TV productions that shoot at least 75% in the state. New Jersey’s Film & Digital Media Tax Credit Programme offers film & TV series up to 37% tax credit. An additional 5% uplift is applied if shooting in certain counties, and a further 2% is applied if productions provide evidence of a tangible diversity plan.
