Buenos Aires offers 20% rebate scheme for international productions

The City of Buenos Aires is offering a 20% cash rebate scheme for international shoots. The incentive is available for production expenditure in the country’s capital city. This scheme is capped at USD600,000 per title, and requires a minimum spend of USD680,000 as well as at least four days shooting in Buenos Aires. It is predicted that the incentives will support around 8,000 jobs across the audiovisual, gastronomic and hospitality industries.

“Culture is a great source of work, and the audiovisual industry plays an increasingly important role in its development,” details Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, the city’s mayor. “With each movie or series that is filmed in Buenos Aires, we are not only able to showcase the best of our city to the world, but also enable jobs to be generated for many people who make their living directly or indirectly from the audiovisual industry. We will therefore accompany all those who want to take advantage of the potential of Buenos Aires so that they can continue developing cultural opportunities in the city.”

The new scheme – named BA International Production (BAIP) – is on offer for productions filming completely or partially in the capital. It covers preproduction, production and/or postproduction activities for feature films of fiction series. The entire fund amounts to the equivalent of USD4 million, and will be launched by the Buenos Aires Film Commission (which was itself relaunched in 2019).

Applications that feature Buenos Aires and its landmarks in their storylines will be treated favourably. The city is home to 70% of the country’s production companies and over half its film schools. More than 40% of the films made in the Argentina each year are set in the city. “The first thing producers ask in international markets is if Argentina has a rebate,” adds the capital's culture minister Enrique Avogadro. “Having one allows us to compete, given the talent in Buenos Aires.”
