The TIFF Variety Artisan Award is a recognition of a creative who has made significant contributions to the world of cinema and entertainment. El Hosaini’s The Swimmers is the writer-director’s capturing of the story of two sisters who left their home of war-torn Syria to embark on a new journey in Europe. Here they were able to take the chance to compete in the Summer Olympics. Co-written by Jack Thorne, the film will have its premiere at the Opening Night Gala Presentation on 8 September 2022.

“Variety is honoured to be presenting Hildur Guðnadóttir with our annual Artisan Award at the TIFF Tribute Awards,” said Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh. “We are looking forward to returning to an in-person awards programme at one of the most important festivals in the world.
