White Lotus’ season two premiere starts off strong

Emmy award-winning comedy drama White Lotus has come out the gate with an impressive 1.5 million viewership count following its season 2 premiere on Sunday 30 October. The HBO series premiere has seen a 63% increase from the season one finale in July 2021. These figures are in relation to both cable and streaming viewership.

The American comedy drama’s first season set out to Hawaii to capture the hidden stories of guests and employees at the elite fictional White Lotus resort chain. Intended to be a six-part limited series, the critical acclaim of the show, as a result of word of mouth hype and its clever storytelling, has resorted to the second season which promises even more salacious plots to come.

First premiering in July 2021, the show went on to receive 20 Emmy nominations across 13 categories, ending the night with 10 wins, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and limited series supporting actor categories received by Jennifer Coolidge and Murray Bartlett. Whilst the premiere viewership surpassed that of season one’s finale, the highest total viewer tally is still held by the previous season finale, which brought in 1.9 million fans across the HBO channel as well as streamers logging in through HBO Max.

This season, the Hawaiian beaches are exchanged for Sicilian ones, juxtaposed against the less picturesque lives of the characters. Jennifer Coolidge and John Gries return to their roles Tanya McQuoid-Hunt and Greg Hunt, taking on the Sicilian commune of Taormina, caught up in the usual dramas and conflicts as experienced in season one, but delving into the new theme of sex that is sure to take the narrative on an emotional rollercoaster.

Season Two opens in the same fashion as its predecessor; with a dead body. Leading up the fatal foreshadowing, new characters Daphne Sullivan, (Meghann Fahy), and her husband Cameron Sullivan (Theo James) land on the romantic Italian coastline along with their holiday invitees, and Cameron’s old college roommate, Will Sharpe (Ethan Spiller), and his wife Harper (Aubrey Plaza).

Creator Mike White returns as executive producer, along with David Bernad and Mark Kamine. Joining Coolidge and Gries are F. Murray Abraham, Adam DiMarco, Beatrice Grannò, Meghann Fahy, Tom Hollander, Sabrina Impacciatore, Michael Imperioli, Theo James, Aubrey Plaza, Haley Lu Richardson, Will Sharpe, Simona Tabasco, and Leo Woodall.
