Barbie girl goes to the real world in new trailer

Warner Bros released the most recent trailer for Greta Gerwig’s larger than life Barbie movie. With little leading up to this most recent release but the signature pink and plastic smiles, this newest trailer cracks the door open to an unexpected turn for Barbie. Starring Margot Robbie as the timeless doll and Ryan Gosling as her beau Ken, the film is set to hit cinemas 21 July 2023.

Barbie has not always had the best reputation as far as dolls go. With questionable ideals of the female body and outdated representations of women when they first hit toy shelves, the brand had a long way to go. But with more inclusive and socially aware changes being made, Barbie has stood the test of time. In a plastic and fantastic world Margot Robbie's Barbie dares to place her perfectly arched foot on the ground as she steps into Greta Gerwig's adventure for the blonde and bright eyed character.

With teasers that crash landed on the internet from 16 December 2022, Gerwig’s Barbie movie suggested a simple live-action adaptation of the various interpretation of Barbie and their multitude of fantastical adventures. Candy coated and artificially shiny, the teasers and trailers that led to this most recent peak poked at distant childhood memories. Capturing an aerial shot of Barbie Land, excited and curious audience members were welcomed to the doll’s world, with not much diverting from expected. But the full length trailer shows that all is not as it seems.

Exiled from her perfect Barbie Land, Barbie enters an existential journey as her and Ken navigate the real world. Leavesden Studios became the home for Barbieland in March 2022 followed by reshoots which took place in Los Angeles just two months ago. Directed by Lady Bird and Little Women director Greta Gerwig with input from her partner and Marriage Story director Noah Baumbach, the Barbie movie is a star studded affair. All variations of Barbie and Ken make an appearance from mermaid to Nobel Prize winners, and just a couple more Kens. The cast includes, Emma Mackey, Issa Rae, Nicola Coughlan, Hari Nef, Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, America Ferrera, Dua Lipa, and Helen Mirren as the narrator.

LuckyChap Entertainment, run by Robbie and husband Tom Ackerley serve as the production company behind the film, with producers including Ackerley, Mattel’s Robbie Brenner and David Heyman from Heyday Films. LuckyChap’s Josey McNamara and Mattel’s Ynon Kreiz also serve as executive producers.
