British Film Commission data reveals rise in UK filming production spend

The UK benefitted from combined production spending of more than GBP1 billion in 2011, according to figures from the British Film Commission. Spending increased from the GBP979 million recorded in 2010, despite the number of feature films falling for the third year in a row.

Adrian Wootton is Chief Executive of the British Film Commission: “Coupled with our excellent infrastructure and facilities, the UK film industry is continuing to have a positive impact on the economy, which at the moment is something which should be celebrated and of which we should be proud.

The variety of films choosing to shoot in the UK last year is indicative of the huge range of productions the UK can cater for.

“The variety of films choosing to shoot in the UK last year is indicative of the huge range of productions the UK can cater for; from period dramas to sci-fi and a list which includes movies from independents, studios and Bollywood.”

Wootton also draws attention to the fact that many studio productions used the UK as a “gateway” to mainland Europe, with projects like World War Z, Wrath of the Titans and Cloud Atlas filming in Britain and then heading to the continent.
