Ra One and Iron Lady among projects boosting London’s Wandsworth borough

Wandsworth in south-west London had a strong 2011, hosting scenes for projects including Oscar-winning feature The Iron Lady and big-budget Bollywood thriller Ra One. With high-profile commercials including Nintendo and Microsoft, the borough made nearly GBP200,000 from filming projects.

The figure acts as a sharp reminder that London offers a lot more besides the iconic images of the Palace of Westminster and the London Eye. Battersea Park is among Wandsworth’s more popular locations. It hosts more than a thousand filming projects a year and in 2011 Ra One was among them.

Being home to historic buildings, beautiful parks, vibrant towns and bustling streets, it is no surprise that Wandsworth is consistently ranked each year as being one of the top five boroughs in London for filming.

Wandsworth Council

Wandsworth Council spoke to the local Guardian news outlet: “Being home to historic buildings, beautiful parks, vibrant towns and bustling streets, it is no surprise that Wandsworth is consistently ranked each year as being one of the top five boroughs in London for filming.”

South London has been visited by several high-profile projects over the past year, although they tend to double for other parts of the world. Brad Pitt’s zombie thriller World War Z shot scenes in Southwark and Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises filmed briefly in Croydon. The proximity to major studios like Pinewood is a huge advantage for big-budget shoots.
