Arctic Air TV series films on location in Canada’s Northwest Territories

Arctic Air, a fictional Canadian TV drama focussing on the lives of bush pilots, filmed partly on location in Canada’s Northwest Territories for its new series. The show films mainly in and around Vancouver in British Columbia but also travelled north to shoot real arctic vistas.

Cast and crew travelled to Yellowknife, capital of the Northwest Territories and only 250 miles south of the Arctic Circle. Heated tents were kept on hand to keep everyone warm between set-ups, Postmedia News reports.

Pascale Hutton is a co-star on the series and spoke to the outlet: “The environment and the terrain and the elements up north play so heavily into the storylines; it informs so much of who these characters are. We really cannot fake that; we have to film in Yellowknife for that reason."

It’s definitely still etched into my bones. We were filming in -30 and -35, right into your bones. There was no warming up!

Hutton added: “It’s definitely still etched into my bones. We were filming in -30 and -35, right into your bones. There was no warming up!”

While the ten days of location filming helped establish the sense of place, flying scenes were filmed in cockpit sets in British Columbia, with window views of the arctic locales added in post-production.
