Kate Winslet films period Australian drama The Dressmaker in Victoria

Kate Winslet has completed production on Australian comedy feature The Dressmaker. Filming was based at Dockland Film Studios in Melbourne, Victoria, and also filmed on location across the south-east Australian state.

“This shoot would not have been possible without the backing of country communities as far afield as Horsham, Little River and Jerilderie,” said Producer Sue Maslin.

“From unique locations to country extras, period vehicles to afternoon tea cakes – we have had extraordinary support.”

Dockland Film Studios has had a strong year and developments have included a major production commitment from the US cable channel Syfy.

Alien invasion miniseries Childhood’s End started filming earlier this month and will tell an epic tale of humanity’s first contact with extraterrestrial life from a novel by Arthur C Clarke. Syfy will return in 2015 to film drama series Hunters, focussing on a Philadelphia cop who becomes involved with a secretive government investigative unit.

“It was a natural choice for us to come back to Victoria with Hunters, which is one of our highest profile projects,” said Mark Binke, Executive Vice President of Universal Cable Productions, when the series was first announced: “We look forward to growing our relationships with Melbourne’s creative community and to continue collaborating with the team at Film Victoria.”

Australia’s production industry has been boosted 50% this year by hosting Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken and Dwayne Johnson’s earthquake drama San Andreas. The industry will get another boost in 2015 when Pirates of the Caribbean 5 films on location in Queensland and becomes the largest production in Australia’s history.
