Penny Dreadful to film third series in Dublin

Gothic TV drama Penny Dreadful will film a third series on location in the Irish capital Dublin. Created by screenwriter John Logan, the show follows the adventures of an assortment of iconic horror characters from 19th century literature in Victorian London.

Penny Dreadful is the perfect fit for Sky Atlantic, truly international in scale and ambition but with a raft of British talent at its core, and filmed in the Republic of Ireland,” said Zaj Bennett, director of the drama’s co-producer Sky Atlantic.

“I’m thrilled to have the series returning to the channel, and to once again be partnering with John Logan and continuing to work with our good friends at Showtime.”

Penny Dreadful is based at Ardmore Studios outside Dublin, which is one of just two major studio facilities in Ireland. Ashford Studios is home to History’s Vikings, another established success story.

Ardmore is currently in discussions to set up a studio facility in Limerick in western Ireland. Local authorities have bought a former Dell factory and are keen to turn it into a new production centre to bring more shoots to the region.

“There is a clear and urgent demand for large scale studio space and support buildings in Ireland,” said Conn Murray, Chief Executive of Limerick City and County Council, when the acquisition was announced last month: “Many of the pre-conditions necessary for the creation of studios already exist in Limerick.”

Last month Pinewood Studios set up new production service company Pinewood Productions Ireland Limited to support clients filming in the country.

Earlier this year the Irish government boosted the country’s filming incentive support to 32% and expanded it to cover non-EU star salaries.
