New TV drama Blood & Oil to film at Park City Film Studios in Utah

Upcoming TV series Blood & Oil will be based at the recently-opened Park City Film Studios near Salt Lake City in northern Utah. The western state is not yet a production hub but in recent years has hosted films like the survival drama 127 Hours and the epic sci-fi movie John Carter.

Blood & Oil is being planned as a new soap opera following oil magnates in North Dakota, similar in theme to the iconic Dallas.

Utah location filming for the drama was first announced in June, and Blood & Oil will be the first network series in nearly ten years to shoot in the state.

“It’s highly unusual for a brand new studio to be selected for major production,” said Greg Ericksen, owner and developer of the studio facility: “You can imagine we are very excited to be working with ABC on this project.”

“The Park City Film Studio played a key role in attracting ABC’s Blood & Oil to Utah,” added Virginia Pearce, director of the Utah Film Commission: “We are excited for the studio to be included in our film industry resources.”

Production in the US south-west is dominated by New Mexico, which offers a generous filming incentive programme, high-quality studio facilities and an experienced crew base. Nevada and Texas have both recently cut funding to their filming incentives, while Arizona is one of the few US states that offers no financial support of any kind to the national screen sector.

California aims to challenge New Mexico’s regional dominance through its boosted filming incentive, which is prioritising TV production.
