China plans global distribution for its English-language sci-fi film Lost in the Pacific

New Chinese feature film Lost in the Pacific is being billed as the country’s first English-language 3D sci-fi action adventure film and has picked up strong pre-sales in South-East Asia. China is hoping that the movie’s English-language content will aid western distribution.

Lost in the Pacific is set in 2020 and – in a plot sounding similar to Titanic – tells the story of a group of international passengers caught in a mysterious disaster on the inaugural flight of a luxury airliner.

The film stars Chinese actress Zhang Yuqi alongside US actor Brandon Routh, who is perhaps best known for starring in Bryan Singer’s 2006 superhero movie Superman Returns.

Lost in the Pacific was filmed at Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios and is currently in post-production. The plan is to initiate a global release by the end of this year and production company Arclight Films has secured deals in countries including Vietnam, India, the Philippines and Turkey.

“China’s film industry is witnessing increasing box office sales both at home and overseas,” said Elliot Tong, Head of Asian Sales and Acquisitions for Arclight Films, in comments to Indiewire.

“A film like Lost in the Pacific has all the makings of an international success story on a global scale. Buyers from all territories see enormous potential in Lost in the Pacific.”

Upcoming fantasy epic The Great Wall is the biggest China-US co-production so far. The film shot on location in China and features a cast of high-profile US and Chinese stars headed by Oscar-winner Matt Damon in a move that producers hope will maximise the movie’s international appeal.
