Indian snack ad films on location in Mumbai

A new advert for a snack food called Hippo has been filmed in locations throughout Mumbai in India. The advert, made by Equinox Films, takes the perspective of the brand’s hippo character as it travels around a series of chaotic scenes and offers the snack by way of its disembodied hand to help make peace.

One of the film’s early scenes shows a street brawl and features a man vandalising a car window with a baseball bat. Manoj Shroff, a producer with Equinox, explained that all the crowd scenes were carefully choreographed and added: “We do need local permission to shoot on all roads in Mumbai and all permission needs at least five working days.” He added that the scene was filmed on a Sunday for greater ease.

Chaotic scenes were also filmed at south Mumbai’s Elphinstone Technical Institute, which doubled for a government building where another mass brawl takes place. A classroom in reality, the production acquired a permit and removed the benches to make way for a set that was then destroyed in the brawl.

Mr Shroff concluded: “Mumbai is a great place to shoot. You just need to keep adequate time for permission and work with a good location team.”
