Canada and New Zealand's indigenous sci-fi feature nominated for 11 Canadian Screen Awards

Night Raiders - a co-production between Canada and New Zealand - has been nominated for 11 Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Motion Picture. The project is written and directed by Cree-Métis filmmaker Danis Goulet (Wapawekka, Barefoot). Goulet received nominations for both the Original Screenplay and Achievement in Direction categories, as well as the John Dunning Best First Feature Award. The Awards will be presented during Canadian Screen Week in April and shown on Canadian television.

Cannes Lions are celebrating Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) as Creative Marketer of the Year. The honorary accolade is presented to a marketer that has amassed a body of Lion-winning work over a sustained period of time. Last year’s Cannes Lions awards (which were given for work from 2020/2021) saw AB InBev amass an outstanding haul of 40 Lions. This total was comprised of two Grands Prix, two Titanium, nine Gold, 10 Silver and 17 Bronze Lions.

Cahir Castle - one of Ireland’s largest and best-preserved castles - is the winner of the fifth edition of the EUFCN Location Award. Organised by EUFCN (European Film Commissions Network) the competition celebrates the top European locations in the film and television industries. Cahir Castle served as a key setting for David Lowery’s feature film The Green Knight. The project is produced by Wild Atlantic Pictures, offering a cinematic retelling of one of the famous medieval tales, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

The Annual Cineposium organised by the Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI) will be held in Latin America for the first time. This marks the first time that Bogotá - the capital city of Colombia - is set to host the international conference. The Cineposium connects AFCI members with global production industry decision-makers as well as government policymakers. It focuses on education and professional development specifically for film commission professionals.

21 shortlisted candidates have been revealed for Netflix and UNESCO's short film competition African Folktales, Reimagined. The nominees cover 13 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa. An extra candidate was included in the original list of 20 as result of the high quality of submissions. Over 2080 submissions in numerous languages were evaluated by industry professionals from across the continent.

The global rise in Omnicron cases has caused the Producers Guild of America (PGA) to delay its 33rd Producers Guild Awards ceremony. Originally scheduled for 26 February, the event will now take place on 19 March. While the venue - Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel - remains the same, the postponement represents another calendar change for the movie awards season. Attendees will need to provide proof of vaccination and booster (if eligible) as well as a recent negative COVID-19 test.

Berlinale to remain in-person as European Film Market goes virtual

Officials have confirmed that the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival will remain an in-person event. Although the European Film Market (EFM) - which typically runs alongside the Berlinale - is now taking place as fully virtual event, organisers have told the global film community that the core festival will continue as planned from 10th to 20th February. Strict protocols will be put in place to protect delegates from Covid-19, with the precise terms to be revealed shortly.

Ten global cities announced for Gerety Awards 2022

The Gerety Awards has announced the ten international cities that its ambassadors will meet in 2022. London will feature alongside New York, São Paulo, México city, Copenhagen, Moscow, Brussels, Vienna, Manila and Tokyo. The full executive jury from each city will be revealed very soon. As well as defining the overall shortlist, these juries will choose the agency and production company of the year from their respective countries.
