With a tone of gratefulness for the unwavering support, SAG-AFTRA’s chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland joined a webinar with leading UK crew and actor unions Equity and Bectu. As strikes in the U.S. continue to press on, the effects on the UK industry have not gone unnoticed. Joining Crabtree-Ireland on the call were Bectu National Secretary Spencer MacDonald and Equity General Secretary Paul W. Fleming.

On Thursday 13 July, SAG-AFTRA  president and negotiation lead Fran Drescher led her union of 160,000 members into its first film and television strike in 43 years. This also marks the first double strike with writers and actors since 1960. From the first signs of disruption visible in early June with 65,000 members voting to authorise an actors strike, and the subsequent signing of a letter stating preparation to strike by over 1000 actors, the foundation had been set for the events.

Wirral Council has discovered that the French author Jules Verne set his classic 1874 science fiction novel The Mysterious Island in the English town of Birkenhead. Verne’s artistic legacy shaped the DC and Marvel comic books as well as their contemporary film franchises. The new findings that link Birkenhead to The Mysterious Island imply that the small area lying across Liverpool’s River Mersey may have untapped star potential as a prime movie destination.

The latest round of the Netherlands Film Production Incentive 2020 has granted nineteen productions a total of EUR8.2 million. US Comedy series Atlanta has been supported with a EUR555,446 contribution. Steve McQueen documentary Occupied City, about Amsterdam under Nazi occupation during World War II has been granted a financial contribution of EUR1,375,323.

Vancouver, one of North America’s busiest filming destinations, currently has two million square feet of film-ready studio space. The planned expansion by Martini Film Studios will raise the sound stage capacity of the region by fifteen percent, providing much needed state-of-the art production infrastructure to the busy region.
