Eight UK country estates make Manderley House in Netflix Rebecca adaptation

Manderley, a fictional country house is integral to Daphne de Maurier’s 1938 psychological thriller Rebecca, which opens with the iconic lines “Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again”. The house itself is such a central character that production designer Sarah Greenwood (Sherlock Holmes, Beauty and the Beast) knew it needed to seem new and unique. Eight UK country houses and estates were amalgamated for the Netflix adaptation.

The 90 minute comedy-drama about a six-year-old Roald Dahl who meets his idol Beatrix Potter will air on Sky One as part of its Christmas schedule. Hartswood Films produced the series for Sky Studios. Filming took place on location in Wales and at Seren Studios (former Pinewood Studios) in Cardiff.

The three-part series inspired by Bram Stoker’s novel filmed in locations historically tied to the horror genre. The three part series was written and created by Sherlock co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss who have noted Dracula’s importance to the genre, saying “what’s special about Dracula, is that Bram Stoker gave evil its own hero”.

There was a strong contingent representing the UK at this year’s FOCUS show, the meeting place for international production. Local and national screen agencies through to production services companies, location providers and production technology firms were among the UK exhibitors, many of them based in a dedicated UK Focus zone at the Business Design Centre in Islington.

After submitting an application for the title in 2016, Bristol has now been named a City of Film by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation). With the honour, Bristol will be added to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network which promotes cultural diversity and sustainable urban development in 54 countries around the world.
