How The Good Place gained access for filming in LA’s Getty Centre

NBCUniversal’s The Good Place is one of the few projects to have gained access for filming in LA's Getty Centre. The Getty, a galley and campus with gardens and views overlooking the city has only permitted filming on three occasions in its twenty-five year history, previously featuring prominently as Starfleet HQ in Star Trek into Darkness. “They were casting the Getty Center as the Good Place – what could be better?” says Julie Jaskol, Assistant Director, Media Relations at The Getty.

It is fair to say that in the UK, at least, Benidorm’s reputation precedes it. Having boomed on to the scene in the sixties with the advent of package holidays, it has maintained such a prominent position in British culture that it spawned ITV’s award-winning situational comedy Benidorm, about a group of British holidaymakers who visit the Spanish resort each year, that remained popular for its ten series run. Needless to say, with this my reference point I was more than intrigued to find out what the seaside city could offer to productions beyond the cliched image.

In December 2018, Tunisia’s Tozeur International Film Festival (TOIFF) invited a group of eight location managers to attend its first edition, followed by a scout of the country. Looking to revive its international filming industry, our attendance at the festival and tour were conceived as ways to encourage international filming in Tunisia once again.

In early November the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau invited six British location managers on a familiarisation trip to Sri Lanka. I joined David Pinnington (Guardians of the Galaxy, Game of Thrones), Eduardo Rodriguez (Ready Player One, Black Mirror), Ben Macgregor (Blitz, RocknRolla), Martin Walker (The Fitzroy, Ill Manors) , Mick Ratman (The Flag, Welcome to Sarajevo) and Algy Sloane (Londoners, Driving Lessons) to document the trip for The Location Guide.
