Cannes Film Festival announces its official selection for 2023

With just a month to go until the start of one of the most anticipated cinema celebrations of the year, the 2023 instalment of the Cannes Film Festival has announced its official lineup. The festival’s director made the announcement on 13 May alongside incoming festival president Iris Knobloch. As Swedish filmmaker and two-time Palme d’Or winner Ruben Östlund takes the helm as jury president, the material on offer for judging features entries from talent such as Jonathan Glazer, Ken Loach, Wes Anderson and many more. Delivering a star studded slate of projects, this year’s festival will also present a record number of women directors as well as a culturally diverse array of entrants  in competition.

Filmmaker Wes Anderson’s trailer for his latest venture Asteroid City has been revealed. Coated in candied pastel tones, the trailer features quirky snapshot of Anderson’s signature symmetrical style. The film consists of  a star studded cast including Hong Chau, Margot Robbie, Tom Hanks and Scarlett Johansson. Asteroid City is set for limited theatre release on 16 June and wider release on 23 June.

General sale for tickets to the honouring of writer, actor, producer, author and NYU Grad Film Tenured professor Spike Lee will go on sale today at 4pm GMT. Lee will be honoured with the BFI Fellowship, the highest honour to be bestowed by the BFI. The filmmaker’s work includes his Academy Award-winning BlacKkKlansman and classics such as She’s Gotta Have It, later adapted for the Netflix series of the same title, and Do The Right Thing. The ceremony will take place at the BFI Southbank on 13 February, hosted by BFI Chair Tim Richards and BFI Chief Executive Ben Roberts.

The BFI announced on Friday 20 January the instatement of independent producer Ama Ampadu as the new senior production and development executive for the BFI Film Fund. Replacing Kristin Irving, Ampadu will report to Natascha Warton, the Fund’s Head of Editorial, and work alongside Louise Ortega who joined as senior production and development executive last year, as well as editor-at-large Lizzie Francke.

The straight 8 shootout 2022 is set to premiere 20 short films at Cannes. Presented by APA and Cinelab Film & Digital, the competition's screenings are scheduled for Friday June 24th at Cinema Les Arcades, 77 Rue Felix Faure. Breakfast sponsored by LS Productions takes place from 10.00am 10.45am. This is then followed by a prompt 11.00am call time, with wrap time scheduled for 12:45pm after the official voting and awards ceremony in the cinema.
