Tenerife audiovisual production sets new EUR58.3 million record

A new record-level of investment in Tenerife’s audiovisual production was achieved in 2021. The latest economic impact equals approximately EUR58.3 million, more than double the previous EUR28.8 million record set in 2018. A large portion of 2021’s projects benefited from the attractive tax breaks offered by the Regional Government of the Canary Islands. Efforts made by Turismo de Tenerife’s Tenerife Film Commission were also pivotal in promoting the island as a great place to make films.

I recently got an opportunity to visit Disney's new Infinity Stage last week at their Burbank lot to witness a demonstration of ILM's StageCraft technology made famous on The Mandalorian. As illustrated in the image above, being Angelenos, we were all bundled up in our puffer jackets for the 60˚F cold-for-LA morning. However, soon we were transported from Burbank to New York, and halfway around the world to the tropical Maldives in the space of a couple mouse clicks, all without any of the hassle of flights and visas, or worrying about fluctuating currencies and political strife.

A new collaboration between director Guy Ritchie and actor Jake Gyllenhaal is set to shoot in Spain’s Alicante area. In turn, the Spanish region will double as Afghanistan for the war-themed action-thriller. The as-yet-untitled project is budgeted at an estimated USD55 million. MGM and Amazon have respectively completed separate deals for US and international rights.

The UK’s largest and most state-of-the-art Dailies department has been unveiled by Twickenham Film Studios (TFS). The new Dailies set-up is lead by: Stuart Bryce, head of picture; Tomasz Witkowski, director of engineering and technology; and Jack Watts, head of technology and standards. The group will bring together a world-class team of Dailies creatives, colour scientists, artists and technical operators, delivering  the very best ‘tent-pole’ feature film and episodic work for major studios and streamers.

Czech Republic production incentives set for EUR12 million increase

The Czech Republic’s Culture Minister Lubomír Zaorálek has transferred an extra EUR12 million, or CZK300 million, to the State Cinematography Fund in an attempt to attract new film projects to the country.  Drawing from state budget reserves, the 2021 budget for national production incentives has now grown from EUR31.5 million to EUR43.5 million, or the equivalent of CZK800 million increasing to CZK1.1 billion.

In total, the 196 judges from 36 countries composed of industry leaders from across the globe awarded 4 Grand Prix, 15 Gold, 47 Silver, 48 Bronze, from a total of 114 winners.
