Filming in Filming on location in Baku in Azerbaijan

Baku is the largest city in Azerbaijan on the Caspian Sea and is also the country’s capital. It’s situated on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula and is divided into a downtown region and a small and much older Inner City.

The whole city has wildly varying architecture, ranging from the Old City to modern buildings and the spacious layout of the Baku port. Many of the city's most impressive buildings were built during the early 20th Century when European architectural styles were combined to give the city an original and unique appearance.

Late modern and postmodern architecture began to appear at the turn of the 21st Century. Economic development has resulted in urban modernisation with buildings such as the SOCAR Tower and Flame Towers. These projects also brought the attention of international media and TV programmes like Discovery Channel's Extreme Engineering.

The Old City of Baku, also known as the Walled City of Baku, has a great sense of history. Most of the walls and towers survive and were strengthened after a Russian conquest in 1806. This part of Baku is picturesque with its maze of narrow alleys and ancient buildings. Cobbled streets wind past the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, two caravansaries (historic roadside inns), baths and the Juma Mosque.

In 2003, UNESCO placed the Inner City on the List of World Heritage in Danger, partly as a result of damage from an earthquake in 2000.

Azerbaijan doesn’t offer formal filming incentives, but discounts are available on location filming permits in Baku, depending on the specific production. Features that showcase the city and employ local crew and accommodation can get location fees waived altogether, while price reductions are available in other cases for interior filming if by-law conditions are met.

Baku has been a popular filming location in recent years, hosting high-profile shoots like James Bond thriller The World Is Not Enough. The Ministry of Culture offers filming support and limited equipment supplies such as Panther dollies, RED Epic cameras and GFM cranes are available in the city.
