The appeal of Latvia's solid crew base, low production costs and Riga Motion Studio have been enhanced by two competitive filming incentives.
The co-financing between the two schemes totals up to 50%. The national 20-25% rebate can be combined with the Riga Fund which provides up to 25% of expenses. To date, twenty-five international productions from ten countries have received co-financing.
The architecture ranges from medieval, art nouveau to soviet era buildings and large baroque palaces. The large Rundale palace has welcomed international shoots including War and Peace and Netflix's The Last Czars. Villages, and towns set amongst forests are among the range of locations available in the country, and have been doibled for Warsaw, Berlin, London, Zurich, and soviet territories.
There is a base of crew available in the country as well as local studios, equipment rental facilities and a backlot facility at Cinevilla studios. Latvia is part of the North Star Film Alliance with Estonia and Finland. Launched in 2019 the alliance promotes the Baltic region and makes accessing to financing, locations, and facilities in the region more harmonised.
Climate
Latvia has four distinct seasons. January is the coldest month with daytime temperatures averaging around -10C, but in some cases it can go down to -20C with strong north-easterly winds. Heavy snowfall is also possible in the winter months from December to March. It is often breezy and humid due to the proximity of the Baltic Sea. In summer (June to August) daytime temperatures reach 25C. The summers are mostly dry but with the risk of thunderstorms at the end of the day. July is the warmest month with an average temperature of 20C. Annual precipitation is about 400-600 mm.
