Filming in Massachussetts

Massachusetts is set to keep its 25% filming incentive following a decision from lawmakers.

The state has hosted high-profile productions like The Fighter and American Hustle, and a new Ghostbusters movie filmed locally.

Filming incentives are intensely controversial across the US and earlier this year the Governor of Massachusetts proposed defunding the incentive to redirect the money elsewhere in the economy. The Legislature disagreed.

Boston is reportedly standing in for New York in the new Ghostbusters movie, which features an all-female line-up of main characters.

The state has also recently hosted The Finest Hours, a true-life drama telling the story of a dramatic Coast Guard rescue operation that took place off Cape Cod in 1952 when two oil tankers collided.

Massachusetts offers New England Studios outside Boston, where film- makers have access to four 18,000 sq ft sound stages. Despite this, both the new Ghostbusters movie and The Finest Hours have reportedly used adapted filming spaces.

Filming turned out to be kind of Boston all the way. A good portion of the cast came from there. It’s a great place to film.”

Climate

Massachusetts has a continental climate. The western part of the state has generally milder conditions than the east. Temperatures in the west range from a winter average of -6C to a summer average of 20C, while the lowlands in the centre of the state can be a few degrees warmer in each season.
In the east along the Atlantic seaboard temperatures are moderated by the ocean and come to around - 1C in winter and 23C in the summer months. Rainfall is evenly spread throughout the state, but the west gets the most snow.
