Filming in Quebec

Montreal has been given a boost by the huge international success of the last two X-Men films.
Quebec’s success is partly built around a 25% base filming incentive. A separate 20% visual effects incentive is also available and Cinesite and Technicolor have both recently established offices in Montreal as a result.

Denis Villeneuve's recent sci-fi epic, Arrival was shot entirely in Quebec, jumping between Montreal and Bas-Saint-Laurent.

While these big-budget productions shine the spotlight on Montreal’s world-class studio facilities, the city also has much to offer in terms of exterior filming locations. Producers are frequently drawn to the historic architecture, which dates back to the mid-17th Century. This sense of history means Montreal can easily double for many different parts of the world, including iconic parts of Europe.

The city of Montreal offers a number of signifi- cant advantages for our company, including a qualified workforce and vibrant film and video game industries. Those strengths will no doubt contribute to Cinesite Inc’s success in the Americas and to raising the profile of Quebec and its largest urban centre around the globe.

Climate

Southern Québec, where most of the population lives, has a continental climate, with hot summers, cold snowy winters, which can be as short as four months, and plenty of rain. Spring tends to be short and mild, and autumn is chilly.

The central region has longer, colder winters and shorter, cooler summers, while the far north has a severe arctic climate with a freezing winter and a continuous permafrost. Winter can vary from five months in the south to eight months in the north, averaging between -10C and -25C.
