Filming in Romania

Romania's reliable studios, a wide range of filming locations and experienced crews have long attracted production work. The introduction of a generous 35-45% incentive in 2018 has also reinvigorated its appeal to high-profile productions.

Recent productions include Netflix’s  A Christmas Prince: A Royal Baby, Sony Television’s Alex Rider and Lionsgate sci-fi thriller Voyagers starring Lily-Rose Depp and Colin Farrell.

The cost-effective value of working in Romania, combined with a strong set of locations that can double for much of Europe, brings in a range of productions from advertising to TV and feature films.

BBC America’s Killing Eve, has returned to the country throughout its three seasons to double Bucharest for both for Paris and Moscow. The third season travelled outside the capital to the UNESCO World Heritage village of Viscri, in Transylvania, which doubled for Poland.

In October 2020 Around the World in 80 Days, a European co-production starring David Tennant as Phileas Fogg, began shooting with Castel Film Studios. The series, which follows Fogg's quest to travel around the world in just 80 days, shot between South Africa and Romania, highlighting the country’s potential to double as well as its strong studio facilities.

Bucharest is not exactly a hidden gem because everybody knows it is there, but it is under exploited. It is a very versatile location and it has scale which gives it an edge over other places we might have chosen. We have found everyone that has joined on the technical and logistical crew has been excellent and made things run smoothly.

Autumn is dry and cool, with fields and trees producing colourful foliage. Winters can be cold, especially in the mountains. Abundant snowfall may occur throughout the country from December to mid-March. There are significant differences in the climate between different regions of Romania.
